Maha Shivratri, which translates to "the Great Night of Shiva," is observed on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu lunar month of Phalgun. This sacred day is believed to be the night when Lord Shiva performs the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. Devotees fast, chant hymns, and offer prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the supreme yogi, the destroyer of evil, and the epitome of compassion.
